Children and Divorce

In cases most couples who divorce do not have assets in excess of their needs. Two households can often cost twice as much. Household expenses that were forty percent of income now are eighty percent, the math does not work long. A court cannot accomplish an exact or mathematically equal division of property and time with children.

Predictability and divorce don’t go together, far from it. Many people have in mind a “TV” version of how divorce works, the reality it is nothing like that. Thinking that it is the other partner’s fault, they must be punished and pay for the same lifestyle is not reasonable or wise. Also, just because you are considered eligible for post-divorce support does not necessarily mean that you will receive it. Again, most couples who divorce do not have assets or income in excess of their current needs.

A separation or divorce is a highly stressful and emotional experience for everyone involved, but children often feel that their whole world has turned upside down. For them many times it appears that somehow it is their fault.

Consequently, it’s wise to understand the realities of what a divorce can and can’t do for you. Divorce will change your standard of living and there is little, if anything, the court can do about the change. That change effects your children also. Where once they lived in relative comfort with little worries, now often both households struggle.

Divorce does not take away your responsibility towards your children, and this includes dealing with their other parent, because divorce doesn’t make your ex-spouse any less your child’s parent.

Divorce can bring up new conflicts between couples that cause more tension than when they were married.

Divorce has many witnesses, many victims.
